FAQs

What does blacklist mean?

It means the IMEI code of a device was reported lost, stolen, or with unpaid bills or installments. This is an additional restriction set by the network carrier.

It is also known as having the phone blacklisted or reported.

When a device is blacklisted, some of its features will not work, and it's easy to identify if the IMEI is blacklisted, as the phone will not connect to the network and won't be able make nor receive phone calls. Sometimes, you might be able to send SMS or use the mobile data, but you can't make phone calls.

Usually, when an IMEI is reported, the phone displays one of these messages: "error MM6", "connection error", "No Service", "SOS/emergency calls only".

Is it useful to run an IMEI Blacklist Check?

With the IMEI Blacklist Check service by doctorSIM you can find out if a phone is reported or not, also known as "clean".

We recommend this phone check for several reasons:

  • To buy a second-hand phone with a guarantee that the IMEI is clean. Ask the vendor for the IMEI info and tell them to give you the phone's IMEI so that you could check it yourself
  • To sell your phone second-hand, and ensure a safe transaction
  • To network unlock your device with all guarantees

Can the blacklist be removed?

Yes, it can be removed, as long as the phone's legal owner contacts the original network carrier that reported the phone.

A blacklisted IMEI can only be removed by the network carrier, no other company or entity is entitled to do so.

In order to remove the blacklist, the legal owner of the phone has to provide proof that the initial situation that caused the phone to be blacklisted has been solved.

What network carriers can blacklist an IMEI?

Blacklisted IMEIs are registered in a database belonging to the Blacklist initiative, and most of the network carriers collaborate with it. More and more companies join it everyday.

Here you can find the list of the network carriers working with the Blacklist Initiative.

The information regarding your IMEI check status is updated on a daily basis through the Blacklist Initiative Association, to which most of the carriers are affiliated worldwide.

If my phone is reported, can I unlock it?

You can network unlock a blacklisted IMEI, but please keep in mind that the network unlock will not remove the IMEI report, as they are two different restrictions, and they have to be eliminated separately.

However, you can request the network unlock and follow the steps once the IMEI info shows clean and the phone has been removed from the blacklist, as our unlock instructions do not expire. To remove a phone from the blacklist, you need to contact the original carrier.

Important to keep in mind that, even if you network unlock your clean device now, it can still be blacklisted in the future if the original carrier of the device declares it lost, stolen, or if unpaid bills are left.

How can I blacklist an IMEI if my phone was stolen?

If your phone was lost or stolen, and you want to report it, it is necessary to contact your network provider. They will ask you for the IMEI. That's why we recommend keeping it in a safe place to prove you are the legal owner of the device.

Keep in mind that only the legal owner can blacklist an IMEI.

Can I damage my phone if I run the IMEI blacklist check?

Not a reason to worry about it! It is 100% safe to run the SIM blacklist check with doctorSIM.

You only need the IMEI code you want to run the phone check on, and we will send you the full report, informing you if the device is reported as lost, stolen or unpaid.

Rest assured, the information you provide will be protected by the highest security standards and Online Security and Protection Certificates.
